Steele's remarks were pretty much correct, since nobody could conquer the wild tribes of Afghanistan from Alexander the Great on (330 B.C) until the Muslims, who only half-conquered them, basically being satisfied with conversion to Islam. In modern times the British got miserably defeated, then the Soviets, albeit with our help, and now we look to be on the loser's team there too. The pipe dream that we can make them pro-Western with a secular democracy that dumps horrible Islamic Sharia is doomed unless we want to take the children away and educate them on our own for 18-21 years. Instead of wasting our treasure and blood there, we should be saving up for the invasion and regime change in Iran, our real #1 enemy.
